We all know that Hollywood's biggest names do quite well for themselves, but until you see a list like the one Vanity Fair unveiled today of the 40 biggest moneymakers of 2010, you really can't appreciate just how much of a haul the top of the top bring in. For instance, Johnny Depp has been in some huge movies, but the idea that the "Alice in Wonderland" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" star brought in $100 million in a 12-month span? Mind-boggling. And amazingly, he's not even 2010's biggest earner.

Two Box Office Flops, One Major

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Tron: Legacy," a costly 3D sci-fi movie that Walt Disney Co has promoted for more than three years, took the top spot at the North American box office, but with a disappointing weekend haul of $43.6 million, according to estimates issued by the company on Sunday.

Industry observers had been expecting a three-day start in the $50 million range. As openings go this year, the massively hyped sequel to an obscure 1982 movie failed to crack the top-10, and observers have said it will need to rely on strong overseas business to break even.

Tourist Bomb at North American Box Office

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The third movie in the shaky "Narnia" fantasy franchise and a romantic thriller starring ubiquitous celebrities Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp both fell flat at the weekend box office in North America, according to studio estimates issued Sunday.

"The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" opened at No. 1, as expected, but with three-day sales of about $24.5 million across the United States and Canada. Industry pundits had predicted a $30 million to $40 million start for the third adaptation of C.S. Lewis' Christian-themed books.

The film got off to a much better start overseas, earning $81 million, and distributor 20th Century Fox said it was "excited" about its overall prospects.

"The Tourist," starring Jolie and Depp as a mismatched pair cavorting around Venice, came in at No. 2 with $17 million -- short of dampened forecasts in the $20 million range.

Lindsay Lohan Loses Role

It didn't take long for Lindsay Lohan's replacement for the Linda Lovelace biopic, Inferno, to be announced.

"We are casting Malin Akerman for the role of Linda Lovelace," director Matthew Wilder tells E! News. "We are currently in negotiations and working out the legalities of bringing her on board."

It's always been part of the conceit of Adam Sandler movies that his boyish charm eventually wins over the young, attractive gal who is way out of his league. Sure, the female lead is initially turned off by his goofball humor or infantile outbursts, but she sees the wounded, good-hearted guy underneath and warms up to him by the end.

Mel Gibson to Appear in Hangover 2

It looks like Mel Gibson will actually be starring in something other than crass phone meltdowns again soon. The actor will have a cameo in The Hangover 2.

The troubled actor "will make a cameo as a tattoo artist. Filming is taking place on the Warner Bros. lot, and Mel is expected to film his role in two weeks."

A Bangkok set has been constructed in L.A, but the production will move to Thailand to film on location there the end of October. Sans Mel, of course.

Star Wars Movies In 3-D

As just about everyone saw coming, Lucasfilm is going to convert all six "Star Wars" films into 3D format. (George Lucas himself told "Access Hollywood" that after years of tinkering with the idea of 3D conversion and not being a fan of the format thus far, the success of "Avatar" was "a new impetus to make that happen.")

The films, starting with "The Phantom Menace," are expected to come out every year starting in 2012 and ending in 2017, which will be the 40th anniversary of the original "Star Wars" release. Though Lucasfilm says it hasn't set exact dates for each release), we suppose it's important that they're shown in chronological order, because the movies are such cliffhangers now, decades later.

But will they be worth the two-to-seven-year wait?

Newcomer Ashley Bell Bent Over Backwards to Make 'The Last Exorcism' Scarily Real

Sometimes all it takes to turn a movie into a "must-see" is one memorable image. Lately, those compelling moments from trailers and ads have been eye-popping digital effects. Like tidal waves cresting over the Himalayas in "2012" or giant robots tumbling down the highway in "Transformers."

This week's horror movie release "The Last Exorcism" has been garnering much attention with a shot just as impressive as anything from a big-budget blockbuster. The trailer ends with the image of a young woman in a nightgown and boots bent over backwards at an impossible angle. It's so memorable and unsettling that the studio used it for the movie's poster. What makes it impressive, though, is that it does not use any special effects. No CGI, no puppets. That shot is actress Ashley Bell bending like that for real.

Inception Finally Dethroned

LOS ANGELES - "The Other Guys" are the main guys at the box office, knocking off "Inception" to take the No. 1 spot.

The buddy-cop parody starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg made $35.6 million in its opening weekend, according to Sunday estimates from Sony Pictures.

It's the second-highest debut for a film in which Ferrell has starred, and yet another strong showing for the movies he's made with his frequent collaborator, writer-director Adam McKay. Their biggest opening was "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby," which debuted at No. 1 with $47 million in August 2006. "Step Brothers" made $30.9 million and came in second place when it opened in July 2008. And their first film together, "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy," opened in second place in July 2004 with $28.4 million.

'Inception' earns dreamy reception with $60.4M (AP)

LOS ANGELES - Leonardo DiCaprio and Christopher Nolan's "Inception" is anything but a sleeper as the thriller opened big with $60.4 million and a No. 1 finish at the weekend box office, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The Warner Bros. action tale about a team that sneaks into people's dreams is DiCaprio's biggest opening weekend, topping his previous best of $41.1 million for last winter's "Shutter Island."

"Inception" falls far short of director Christopher Nolan's best, though. Nolan is the man who directed the Batman blockbuster "The Dark Knight," which opened over the same weekend two years ago with a record $158.4 million.

Warner Bros. has carved out a niche with this particular mid-July weekend. The studio followed "The Dark Knight" with a $77.8 million opening for "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" over the same weekend last year.

"We like this spot. Not to sound superstitious, but stay away from this weekend. I own it," said Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros.

The final "Harry Potter" movie debuts on the same weekend next summer. Warner plans to open Nolan's third "Batman" movie over that weekend two years from now, though Fellman said the studio could move it to an earlier date that summer.
